Irati comes to us from one of the most iconic wineries in Spain, Manzanos. It was founded in Haro in 1801. It is the oldest winery in Rioja, one of the most heralded appellations in the country. Today the estate is run by the same family, V¡ctor and David Manzanos. Irati translates to manor, located on the right bank of the main river, which runs through Navarra. Manzanos was founded with a very unique strategy. Their mission is to focus on the wines of Rioja and Navarra, which is literally next door. Navarra is in the middle of the Basque country, which borders France and explains many of its French roots in food and wine. In 2016 they purchased Bodegas Luis Gurpegui Muga, considered one of the greatest wineries in Rioja, as well as Spain itself. This sealed their position as a major player in Spain's wine culture. Our experience is that they haven't skipped a beat. The wines are as incredible now as they have ever been. Our selection was crafted from vines grown in their Navarra vineyards. This is the area where Garnacha is king. As much as the French would like to think that Garnacha (known as Grenache in France) is of French origin, it has been proven otherwise. The grape however doesn't play favorites. It makes great wine in either place and our selection is a perfect example. From the strawberry and cocoa, to the violets and vanilla, this is a luscious wine of magnitude. It would shine with a mustard infused pork tenderloin or chicken paprikash.
